Air Conditioning Story

Do you have any air conditioning story that you would like to share with us? Perhaps there are some tips and advice regarding the equipments that you are using now that you would like us to know. What did you do to ensure that your units are in good condition and are reliable when you need to use them during summer and winter?

What about the efficient use of energy?

Protecting mother earth is something that we should be doing to ensure that the next generation continues to enjoy the resources of the earth. Using renewable energy and efficiently are ways that we can do to reduce carbon emission and global warming. Air conditioning and heating equipments contribute a huge percentage to energy used in our house.

Hence paying attention to the way we operate the HVAC equipments will not only help to reduce the electricity bill but also to reduce global warming. Here are some steps that you can take when using air conditioning equipments to conserve energy.

  • Cooling/Heating Capacity of the unit for the space to be conditioned should be determined before installation to prevent oversizing and hence wastage of energy.

  • SEER of the equipment should be as high as possible. The higher the number, the more efficient it is. Read more about this here.

  • ENERGY STAR Rating is used to classify the efficiency of the unit. The higher the star rating, the more efficient it is. The maximum star rating is 6 STARS. This rating is a programme of US Department of Energy and US Enviromental Protection Agency.

  • Air Flow of the unit is given in volume ft/min. The higher the air flow, the better it is able to cool the space. For a small 1 HP residential split unit, the flow is in the region of 200-300 volume ft/min.

  • Closed Windows and Doors of the room to ensure that only the space is being cooled or heated. If the windows or doors are opened, the compressor will run all the time, causing wastage of energy not to mention the electricity bill that you will have to pay.

  • Insulation & Sun Shield should be used to reduce the amount of sun light shining into your room, hence needing more cooling capacity. Similarly, using good insulation on the roof or ceiling of the house will reduce the heat generated hence the space will need less capacity to cool down.

  • Curtains should be used whenever practical to reduce direct sun shining into your room.

  • Thermostat in window/split cooling unit should be set to 24°C as this temperature is the most comfortable setting for people.

  • Trees and Plants outside the house should be planted whenever possible. They help to reduce the direct heat of the sun.

  • Off the unit whenever not in use or if it has to be on all the time, use a programmable thermostat to regulate the temperature of the space.
